I went to dinner last night with my friend Linda, and we stopped by the Grove to see the lighted tree and walk around a bit after a pretty filling dinner at Vegan Glory. We yapped like girls do, and she told me this year, she was going to treat herself to things and travel more. "You just never know what's going to happen in life...you need to enjoy the "NOW" instead of thinking to much about the future and regret not enjoying what you have while you have it. I like it. Not that I don't do that already, its so nice to see someone taking care of themselves.
So in telling you all that, she proceeded to take me into the SWAROVSKI STORE at the Grove, which I have never been in. She wanted to show me a few things and get a second opinion. Honestly, I though this store was for old ladies, but I have to say, I was sort of seduced by all the bling. They have some pretty cool items. I usually would spend my money on Me and Ro, Alex Woo or Van cleef and Arpels..the trendier jewelry, but I think I'm sort of into the bling. . The designs were modern, SUPER SHINY and feminine.

I am so anti-bling, but after walking in there, I think I'm sort of into it. These are all items under $200 but there was so much more. I particularly like the 1st ring show, above and also the shiny gold diamond bangel. It looks so cool on. Check out the store or go online.

Shannon T, one of my closest friends, went on a diet three months ago. She lost 30 lbs. I didn't know there was 30 lbs to lose but when I saw her, she'd vibrant and so happy. Of course, I was instantly jealous that she had the willpower but she told me that all she did was change her diet. She works full-time and didn't have the financial funds to hire a trainer, so she told me that all she did was change her diet to juicing before 2pm, eat lots of apples and bananas, brown rice and tofu (or some sort of protein and veggies. No dessert, no sodas. I don't know if I need to lose that kind of weight but what I would like to do is have more energy and also, fit into some of my size 4 clothing I wore three years ago.
I'm changing my ways, cutting out meat, dessert and I just got this juicer. I putting my foodie hat on the shelf for now and seeing what I can get done in three months like Shannon did.

I think the buyers there are genius and I don't know any of them but I feel like they must be like me, cause everything in the store are things that I want. I found these items which I would love to give or get this holiday season...for myself or for friends. Most under $50... fancy soap $18, vases $28, earrings $28, orange necklace $38, sequins bolero $138, bright scarf $20...but the sequins scarf/necklace is over $400. I know...I know...I'm just saying I like it!

MY HIATUS

Hi there,
Its been a little while since I had the time to blog. Lots has been going down.

Yesterday was September 11th. I remember quite clearly where I was that day. I was in my office at Instyle talking to a photographer named Troy Word with a cigarette in my hand I think (back then we could smoke in our offices), about our photo shoot set in a few hours later that day at Industria which is downtown. Didn't happen.

Alot of families were torn apart that day gorgeous fall day, and a montrous dark cloud of sadness fell upon New York for years to follow. Today, I saw all the covers on the new stands of the children of 911. Haunting. Whenever there is a threat of being separated from your loved ones or family, hearts become open and appreciation sets in.

I found out in July that my dad has colon cancer. It was a bit of a shock, since my father is a 10th degree black belt and was the sort of the champ of the family. He is the rock and the one always urging all of us to eat healthy, exercise and be happy. He had no signs or symptoms other than fatigue. Since July, he has had a long drawn out surgery to remove the tumor, and we have started an aggressive chemotherapy treatment for the next 6 months. He's doing great...has his good days and bad, but its been an amazing journey to get to know my dad. He is a quiet man, and rarely talks about his family so its been nice to see him so vulnerable and talking about his mother and father, who he was separated at 13 during the Korean war.

Also with this news, a close friend of mine, Angie Zupan, a college friend and also, the friend that made my years so much fun back in the 90's in our wild days in NY... was also diagnosed with cancer. Her father, John, another brilliant inspirational guy died suddenly the same week she was diagnosed in a freak motorcycle accident by a drunk driver. I admired him very much, and have always thought he was the coolest...down to earth, so knowledgeable about life and just like my dad, said that anything is possible if you are motivated.

Its amazing...there's No rhyme or reason on why bad things happen, but they do.

With these factors going on, I realized that life is short. Family is important. I quit my job at Los Angeles Magazine and decided to take this time to really live life and be thankful for my health and avoid drama of any sort... take advantage of life around me. I am going with the flow to see where life takes me. Its a new adventure and hopefully we have a happy ending but if we don't have the ending we want, we must enjoy the ride. That is what I am going to do. Enjoy the ride.

A friend of mine is redecorating her apt and I am helping her redesign on a dime. I found these fabrics at West Elm. I love the idea of recycling old pieces that are still comfortable and useful rather than just buying a new couch just to have one. A cushions on an armchair, an ottoman, or if you want to go all out and REUPHOLSTERING that 90's couch in a modern way might be cool. Going to 10 different design stores, and dealing with all that traffic and parking is not fun. Just an idea.

I did a porfolio review about a month ago for APA in Los Angeles, which is a group of photographers that establish, endorse, and promote professional practices, standards, and ethics in the photographic and advertising community.

I met a photographer there named Christina Gandolfo who was an inspiration to me. She is a breast cancer survivor that after finding out she had cancer and living through chemotherapy and being cancer free, decided to follow her dream of becoming a photographer after years of being a magazine editor.

I particularly like her pet photography. I highly recommend her if you live in Los Angeles. She does hip portraits and great photo of animals. Best part...she is SO AFFORABLE. Sittings start at $350.

I just commissioned John Clark, an artist in MIchigan to do piece for me. He does black and white drawings but what makes him so hip is that he does them on book pages.
John was in Time Out New York, Domino Magazine, a British magazine called The Crack and Bust.

The books I have torn up right now are a few collections of short stories by Poe, a few mystery anthologies, and two super old books called The Rosary and A Certain Rich Man. He can do it on a book of your choosing but I'll he'd have to buy the book and add that to your total...

Its father's day. A special day for me this year, and in fact every year.

My dad, Young Ik Suh has had an amazing life and has inspired and done some great things for so many people.

When I analyze my personality to his... we seem so different. He is a powerful man, a person of few words until the words need to be said. He like to stay quiet to hear every one's point of view, but in the end, his always come through loud and clear with so few words.

He is very generous man, but he is a firm believer in kindness, fairness, modesty and justice and has told me always to stay away from people or places that don't believe in these things. These are hard things to remember when you are teen seeking fun in the suburbs, a ambitious young professional in New York trying to get ahead at conde nast and all its slippery and tempting ways, or even now, as a grown woman driving on Wilshire in afternoon hectic traffic having to deal with some mean ass drivers and reminding myself that road rage is not worth the energy.

I do see a few things that I got from my dad...its the fairness thing. I don't lie, steal, cheat or turn someone down if they need help... unless they lack the qualities that are deserving and are self centered. If someone is being thrown under the bus, and I can help it, I am the person that will come in and make an ass out of myself to help that person much like he would. I thank him for a fearlessness that he has given to me.

That is why most of us love our dad's I guess. They have a little voice in our heads that guide us to be good.

I always have something that needs to be fixed in my apt and it will sit there for about a month or two before I get to it.. My Flat Screen TV was acting up the last few weeks, and because I have recently become very addicted to a show called the Voice, this was a priority.
I realized that I always buy new things when something is broken rather than taking the time to fix it...a new years resolution I made this year not to do.

I googled TV Repair LA, and found Johnny's TV Repair. They got to my house in 45 minutes, and man in his early 20's came with a clip board and a box, and greeted me very professionally with assertiveness. He was fast, quiet, and gave me an amazing quote of $150. Afterwards, he gave me reciept, told me there was a 120 day guarentee.

I asked his name, so that I could call the manager to give him a good rec. He told me that he and his dad owned the business and that there was no need to call. When I went to tip him $20, he refused it and said that it was a quick fix, and that it was unnessarry due the ease of the repair. I love this company. More people should hire these guys.

BILL CUNNINGAM NEW YORK THE MOVIE

I'm just went to see Bill Cunningham New York at the Sunset Laemmle. The movie is about the life of Bill Cunningham, a fashion street photographer for The New York Times, known for his candids of women on the street. He came before the Satorialist, the mean spirited Do and Don't of Glamour and WWD. After seeing the film and the passion that he has to interpet modern day women, it left me overwhelmed. He is so pure to the art of fashion, it phenomenal. He is 82 years old, get around New York on his bike (yes...at 82) and covers On The Street during the day, and the socialite party section called Evening Hours every night.

Mr. Cunningham still shoots film and works as he has done the last 50+ years. This movie was the most inspiring movie and person that I have seen in action perhaps since seeing Gustavo Dudamel conduct the LA Phil or hearing Julius Shulman talk about photography a few years ago. I hate to admit it but I cried twice in the documentary.
He is admired by the true fashion icons of New York, even Anna Wintour admits in the movie that she gets dressed for Bill. He is my hero, and you really need to see this film.

I was on the Nate Berkus show a few months ago. He called me to come to New York to do a House Proud feature, talking about my apt and my kids photography business. He ended up cutting the photography part, since he wanted to concentrate on tips for the viewer on how to put an apt together on a dime. It was fun, and it was so great to meet Nate, who I had been a fan of for years. I was a bit nervous, but it was so fun and I met Michelle Adams of Lonny Magazine that day as she was the segment before mine. She is brillant and can't wait to see her next Traditional Home issue!

Last night, my friend Nina asked me to go to a design party with her. Traditional home has hired Michelle Adams of Lonny Magazine, (my favorite magazine out right now...which is an online only mag) to do a partnership where she is guest editing a few issues for the online launch of the magazine. I am really excited to see what she and her partner Patrick do with it. I was lucky enough to meet this genius of a lady on the Nate Berkus show in November. We were both guests on the show, and she was cool as a cucumber and I was very nervous and it was really embarrassing but she was able to sort of settle me down a bit before my segment.

I have been SO INSPIRED by Lonny and most recently Rue magazine that I decided that I needed another redesign. I'm going to call it Redesign on a dime. I have been wanting to change the bedroom for about a year now, but couldn't quite come up with what I wanted to do. I think I decided that I need a sexier bedroom. The bedroom I Have now is really serene and calming but I am bored. I am going to go with either black or dark dark grey. I know what you are thinking...just stop. Check these photos out and also look on Lonny and Rue and you will see that are we not sick of these chic white spaces yet? Should we take a risk and go a little nuts? I think Kelly Wearstler, another hero of mine, was on to something 10 years ago.

I am loving the way my hairstylist, Lissa Renn from the Hive, shaped my hair last week. I think I can say that I offically have long hair now. I chopped it a few years ago and it was alot of fun, but now, that its growing back, there is so much you can do with long hair!

Years ago, I would always put it up in a ponytail to get it out of my face. I am not going to do it this time around. I saw some some inspiration from a few blogs and it has inspired me to take advantage of everything you can do with long straight hair. Its easier to wear down if you have stylish bangs. Wear it down, wear it back, wear it with hats...but don't just throw it back in a pony tail.

I was listening to Melinda Lee on AM radio this morning and she was pushing the special going on at Sur la Table. I was at a birthday party this weekend shooting some photos for a friend, and she had hired Lara Hermanson to make an organic garden in her back yard to produce organic vegetables...I thought it was genius.

Lara's company, called FARMSCAPE, will come in and build, seed and even cultivate the produce weekly for you if you don't have the time or interest in doing it yourself. Its affordable, so you should check out their website. They will go to many different areas in the southern california area, so check out their website for more detailed information. If I had a large backyard, I would definitely consider hiring to consult to make your perfect garden.

So, the Golden Globes and the Oscar awards are basically like my Superbowl.

Back in the day when I worked at Vanity Fair and there would be a viewing party and some folks got chosen to fly to LA, depending on who Graydon picked to come from the staff, it would be this random night of trying to act like it wasn't a big deal among all those celebs that were also acting like being in that room full of icon's was no big deal. It's surreal to see all those personalities in one room and its sort of funny to see everyone kiss each other's ass when they really don't care about the other person. Once you have been to a VF Oscar Party, its not quite what you think it will be. Its slightly vulgar, showing the depth's of those who are desperate to be part of a community in the Hollywood industry. To me, unless you are up for a award, it doesn't makes sense to be there.

Regardless of the vapid qualities that they may be attached with this once a year event, the Golden Globes is a night where dreams come true for filmakers, writers, actors, and musicians. Its a night where childhood hopes turn into something magical and real and I love hearing and seeing the winners. The speeches that come from the hearts of the overwhelmed are inspiring. This year there was a shortage of inspiring speeches. If I were to chose one or two, I would say Colin Firth's was witty, and the young actor from Glee was heartfelt but again, a bit staged.

My favorite celebrities that wore it well were January Jones, Halle Berry, Olivia Wilde, Mila Kunis, Amy Adams, Catherine Zeta Jones, Mandy Moore and Emma Stone. For guys, Jesse Eisenberg, Ryan Gosling, Robert Pattinson and Brad Pitt. See all of them and you decide.

I like these. I like that Jon Hamm likes them. I found these last year on my friend Lizzie's Blog, Designwatcher...and got a pair. I just stepped on them and so had to buy a new pair. They are amazing, sturdy and the fact that I didn't break them this past year, means they are durable. I am really wreckless with my glasses usually. They are $60, and have great lenses. MY TWO CENTS. Our society now is so hypersensitive to random studies done and these days have so much access to information via the internet that is bogus. There needs to be a movment about how we must sort of stop the madness and just start dealing with the fact that parents just need to take a chill pill (not xanax either). It might be easier said than done, as many folks have to deal with moody kids that are dramatic and stubborn...but come on folks. I see kids everyday cause i am shooting them now and I feel like the problem is not the kids. Its the parents and how they deal with the fact that there isn't order.

Is there anyone that can get a show like Caesar Milane did and retrain the way parent deal with their own kids? I'm not talking about Nanny 411 either. See this ridiculous article that will only add fuel to the fire. Can't kids just have a bad week like grown ups do?

She is a mother of two girls, former public school teacher, divorced and now engaged to a former NBA basket ball player. Six chiefs have tried to fix DC’s schools in the past ten years—and failed. When she started this job at 37, this Korean-American from Toledo with no experience running a school system who’s convinced she can succeed caused many important changes and drama.

Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty’s primary-election loss last month was a major reason for her resignations she says. Much to the Korean style of managing, her fearless, blunt, and occasionally undiplomatic style often got her into trouble with her peers. . Rhee aggressively sought to reform a school system whose students produced below-average test scores. She became known for a no mercy, straight-forward approach, seeking to purge public schools of teachers and principals who were incompetent.

WRITTEN ON WIKIPEDIA:
In 2008, Rhee closed 24 schools would close due to excess capacity. Also announced was a plan to add early-childhood programs, gifted and talented programs, art and music classes, and special education services to District schools.
She also became the target of the Teacher's unions. Why? The controversial move to end teacher tenure and promote "merit" pay. She renegotiated how the school system compensates teachers. Rhee offered teachers the choice of: being paid up to $140,000 based on what she termed "student achievement" -- but losing tenure; or, retaining tenure -- but earning much smaller pay raises. She firmly believes that in order to move forward we need to get rid of the bad and lazy teachers that are causing the children to fall behind.

In 2010, Rhee fired 241 teachers, all whom received poor evaluations, and put 737 additional school employees on notice. Teachers were observed by administrators and outside professionals for five 30-minute sessions during the year, and the teachers' performance was rated during those sessions.
Rhee's actions have earned her applause from "school reformers" nationwide, as well as the scorn of teacher unions and community activists.

She announced her resignation as chancellor on October 13, 2010 and has now started STUDENTS FIRST.

I love the Pomogranate glass which is 4 1/2 in tall and around $13 but a cooler way to do is mix and match a bunch of different glasses which is what I always try and do. The USB able is on the camera so you just plug right in to your computer or to the lab that you are going to. This is my one true favorite find this year. I LOVE illustration and custom portraits. I found Lisa Golightly and I can't tell enough people about her custom portrait Illustrations. Here is an artist that will take your photograph and make it into a very subtle illustration of your kids or family into affordable art that is custom and elegant. This is great for all my customers that have some portraits I have done. Go into the website and go into the SKETCH OR LINE PORTRAIT section. I lean toward the side of very much disliking painted portraits like the English did back in the day. Its a bit out of date and I think this type of custom is more modern and less pretentious. HOWEVER, she does have a section if you want to go there. I am going to commission a 10x10 which is only $285!

DIY FROM IKEA

I have been looking for a new shelving unit which was sparked by a dinner party I had the other night. My friend Anastasia Bowen who worked for an architect for many year suggested that I mount the TV on the wall rather than putting it on the vintage credenza I have, and open up the space a bit more. She has exquisite taste and is my high end design expert and totally agree.

There is amazing blog called IKEA HACKER which I read often for ideas. Ikea is the affordable place to go for a quick visual fix in the house...sort of how H&M is for my closet. I found this DIY project. I had this lacking shelving unit in mind to put two or three white units together against the wall to make one long unit for extra seating,and place misc things on such as books and plants. I like what they suggested and you can see how they turned it into a bench below.

Materials: Lack shelving unit, Capita legs, Iris chair pads

Description: This may not be a new idea, but I though I would share the end result!

Instructions: We made the benches before we had the table, only because we had them in storage. I love the look, but as a vertical unit they are not that practical. The benches are Ikea Lack shelving units turned on their side. Please note, their needs to be some attention taken to the amount of weight that the shelves can hold. They are not intended to be benches. We have found that they can easily hold 3 150-180 pounds adults.

We used 6 Capita legs (different heights available), 2 at each end and 2 spot in the middle. Choose the height of the leg depending on the height of your table - we used the 10" size. I chose 5 Iris chair pads as they fit the length and depth of the bench almost perfectly. The cubbyholes can now be sued for baskets or other storage containers for toys, games, table linens. etc

A last trick for rented homes and apartments, hang your own lighting or ask your landlord to do it. If it doesn't require a change to the existing electrical hardware, it is easy to put up and then take down when you leave. And really, it makes such a huge impact. We hung a Kroby light fixture and even installed a dimmer switch. The switch we'll probably leave for the next tenants - every overhead light should be on a dimmer in my opinion.

I read this about this new company yesterday in the NYT, and its a genius idea. This is going to be everywhere in about a minute. I hope the buyers at Whole Foods are on this.

Benjamin Gott has produced this Eco-friendly packaged purified water in recycled materials, with 10 percent of the profits to a foresty foundation and another 10 percent to water conservation foundations. AMAZING.

CONAN O'BRIEN'S BACK

This week was a very special week for me. For some reason, life has not been boring lately.

#1. I was on the Nate Berkus show yesterday, Nov 10, as a very very short segment called HOUSE PROUD. Its a Short segment on ridiculous people boasting about their apartments. Yes, I know, but wouldn't you if they called you to do it?
Anyways, when taping it, I was so nervous (which is really unlike me)... SO nervous, I really feel like I blacked out while still being conscious and standing. I don't recall anything he asked me or what I said, but I do remember feeling like my head was the size of one of those workout balls that you stretch out on at the gym.

I usually don't get nervous when I meet celebrities. Been there done that. I think I have met about 300 celebrities over the last decade and the only people I got really excited about where I studdered a bit when speaking was Bill Gates, Photographer Peggy Sirota when I was 26, and Michael Jordan.

Anyways...focus Sharon...so the point its, this was a special week. It was AWESOME.

#2. Conan O'Brien back on TBS. Love the beard. He looks well rested and having Seth Rogan as his first guest means that he is in buisness. I like his HUGE set, and his 11pm time slot.

I met him in 1999 for a story we were doing at Vanity Fair, and Timothy Greenfield-Sanders was the photographer, and I was the photo editor on that story. I remember going to the studio, laughing from the minute I got there to the minute I left. Somehow, I ended up leaving there with a shot of me on his lap, Riza Cruz, the editor next to him grinning, and Timothy in a group shot with folded arms laughing. He truely is one of the funniest people I have ever met. I met him again a few years later for a shoot for Instyle Magazine where I was the photo editor on. Again, another day of hearty chuckles. He is just one of my favorite celebrities. If you are going to waste an hour, why not do it laughing.
